PENNSYLVANIA (NEWS1130) – Erratic sizing has plagued women for years, but now technology is stepping in to end it.

Several companies have been working to eliminate the problem of inconsistent sizing across the fashion industry through a new strategy, and now one American-based company, Unique Solutions, has invented a full-body scanner, similar to the ones used in airports.

The service is being labelled MyBestFit, and is a free service that makes it easy to find clothes that really fit.

It has already been installed at the King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania — the largest shopping mall on the United States’ East Coast — and plans to expand to 13 more locations by the end of the year.

“It’s the same technology that is used in airports and their scanners,” explains Robert Kutnick, Chief Technical Officer with MyBestFit. “What it does is it sees below the clothing and bounces off the moisture in your skin. Therefore it is getting a true measurement of your skin’s surface area.”

Although companies have used “vanity sizing” or size inflation — altering clothing measurements — to boost a woman’s self-esteem, it inevitably contributes to sizing frustrations.

“For the consumer to go out and navigate, ‘which one do I match with,’ [it’s] a huge challenge,” MyBestFit’s Tanya Shaw told The New York Times. “So many women tie their self-esteem to the size on the tag.”

Right now, there’s a 99-cent iPhone app available in the States, called My Size Finder. It took over six months to gather measurements from more than 300 clothing brands. The app, which prides itself on “helping women find clothing that fit,” is hoping to expand to Canadian shoppers soon.
