VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A popular Commercial Drive thrift store that supports battered woman will close its doors at the end of the month. High rent, a crumbling building and two years of losses means My Sister’s Closet can no longer operate.
The Battered Women’s Support Services Executive Director Angela MacDougall says this is a huge loss for the community. “We have been able to provide low cost clothing and household items to families and community members for 10 years now.”
She adds it has been a critical component of their service work. “We don’t have any capital in order to renovate the building. We will not be able to afford those rents and we’re a non-profit that is operating a thrift store. We need to have a profit.”
The store’s Yaletown location will remain open.
