British Columbians spend the least in Canada on clothing

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Everyone else across the country spends more money than we do here in BC, except when it comes to housing; we only trail Ontario.

This is according to household spending numbers released by Statistics Canada.

On average, we spend 28.8 per cent on shelter. In Ontario, they spend 29.5 per cent.

It’s not really a surprise we spend a lot on keeping a roof over our heads, but what’s interesting is we spend 5.5 per cent on clothes and accessories, the lowest in Canada.

Retail Consultant David Ian Gray says it’s simple, we don’t have the same winter needs as the rest of the country. “We still don’t lead when in terms of being fashionisitas here.  We’re dressing a little bit better but we tend to be a little bit utilitarian in how we buy our clothing compared to a city like Montreal.”

He adds our money also goes elsewhere, which is pretty obvious.  “Especially on the Lower Mainland, we’re pretty foodie out here and we’ll spend on wine and nice meals out, but when it comes to clothing we are probably doing a little bit of catch-up with the rest of Canada.”

When it comes to transportation and food we’re on par with the national average.

Alberta, by the way, leads the way in household spending likely because they don’t pay sales tax.
