VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Be prepared to pay more to clothe your kids if they aren’t fitting into children’s sizes anymore. The HST will soon apply to all adult clothing, even if it is being worn by a child.
Province newspaper columnist Michael Smyth points out that when the HST takes effect on July 1st all adult-sized clothes and shoes will be covered by the new tax.
That’s a shift from the previous taxing system, when people buying adult-sized clothes for kids can sign a “Certificate of Exemption for Children’s Clothing and Footwear” to avoid being charged the PST. But you won’t find them after the HST.
So anyone with kids who don’t fit into Size 16 for girls or size 20 for boys will be paying that extra 7 percent. Smyth says there’s no way to know how much more the provincial government will haul in; it doesn’t keep track of how much PST is rebated.
